PRELIMS
PRELIM REQUIREMENTS for Short and Long Programs - VERY IMPORTANT!!!
Prelim videos are required for short and long programs. To enter preliminary qualifications for a short or long program, you must submit an unedited video of your routine. Short program prelims entrants must have already submitted a routine form for validation and had it approved before submitting a prelims video and an approved routine form. Prelim videos and finalized routine forms must be submitted no later than May 21st, 2010. Long Program entrants do not need to submit routine forms, but the video requirements are the same. Finalists will be notified by June 1st, 2010. For a prelim video to be considered, the competitor must have already registered for the convention and booked their room under the WJF convention block at the Riviera Hotel. (An exception to the hotel requirement will be granted if the competitor lives in Las Vegas). To submit your prelim video, videos can be sent in any video format playable through quicktime or windows media player. The higher the quality the better. You may also use a video hosting company such as youtube to upload the video or you can send the video through file sending services such as yousendit.com. Send video links to wjf6@thewjf.com (Do not send videos as attachments!)
Beginners Competition
This class is open to all ages and is for those who feel they are not qualified to compete in the junior or intermediate class. There is no prize money or air time on the line for the winners, the only prize is bragging rights and an ego boost. Balls, rings, and/or clubs may be used in this competition.
Minimum Requirements:
Move minimum is a three ball basic pattern. If a competitor has a difficult three object move they want to use, they may incorporate it within their routine. There is no minimum or maximum for total amount of moves. You're only restricted by the two minute time limit.
Maximums:
(To keep the competition fair)
• 3 clubs
No moves with four clubs or higher will be allowed
• 5 rings
No five ring moves or runs of six rings or higher are allowed
• 6 ball qualify
If a competitor can run six objects for a long time, they cannot
enter the competition. Please be honest :)
Scoring System:
A panel of judges will make a subjective decision on competitor placement based on difficulty of moves, connections, and execution. Drops and other errors will be taken into account as well. There are no performance related points available in this competition. Errors that will reduce your chances of placing high consist of:
1. Collisions
2. Foot movement / bad form (shuffling steps/bad arm position in the minor cases, to walking around and excessive reaching in major cases. Each individual step
counts as a deduction.)
3. Bad Patterns (exceedingly uneven throw heights, or off timing will count as a single bad pattern block, not as five throws with a bad pattern)
4. Drops (Per drop event. If you drop every single object you're trying to juggle, there will be an additional penalty. So at least try to hold on to one of whatever you're trying to juggle)
5. Loss of balance (falling, stumbling [counts as one stumble, not as
five stumbling steps]
To Compete in the Beginners Competition:
Competitors do not need music for the Beginners Competition. However if they choose to use music, they must follow the music requirements listed under the music section of the WJF Competition rules. A prelim video must be submitted no later than May 21st, 2010. Routine forms are not required. Competitors must be registered for the convention and have booked their room at the Riviera Hotel through the WJF convention block. This must be verified before a prelim video will be considered. Finalists will be informed no later than June 1st, 2010.

Explanation of Juniors Competition qualification expectations:
Qualifying moves with balls and rings: Moves done with three objects requires twelve catches. Moves done with four objects require eight catches. Moves done with five objects requires ten catches.
Qualifying moves with clubs: Three objects requires six catches. Four objects requires eight catches. Five objects requires 10 catches.
The Long Program
Prelim Video Submission Required by May 21st, 2010 - See prelim requirements for details
Required Duration: 6 minutes (cannot be 15 seconds shorter or longer or penalties will be applied)
Props: Must consist of ball, beanbag, ring, and/or club juggling. Balance and head bounce moves may be combined with different props. For example, you may head bounce a ball while juggling rings or clubs.
Attire: Must wear shoes and PG-13 attire. The style of the attire is at the competitor's discretion provided it fits within the aforementioned parameters.
Music: If music is to be used, it must meet all the criteria for music use as detailed in the main music section of the WJF 6 competition rules. Competitors may opt to do their routine in silence in the Long Program.
Grounds for Disqualification: Use of any obscene language or indecent exposure, throwing objects into the audience, or leaving the stage and going into the audience. Ending your routine exceeding one minute early or one minute late.
Scoring:
Routines will be scored on the following criteria:
1. Technical difficulty (Including connections)
2. Performance (How engaging and entertaining the performance is and appropriateness of attire)
3. Choreography (Synching moves and movements to the music)
4. Execution (How well the juggling moves are executed)
5. Originality (How original your performance is including the originality of your moves and the incorporation of those moves within a live performance)
Each criteria is worth 20% of the overall score.
The Short Programs
Prelim Video Submission Required by May 21st, 2010 - See prelim requirements for details
Only the competitor and their equipment are allowed on the competition floor at all times. (No equipment stands, additional props, or assistants for example)
The short programs are scored based on technical difficulty and connections. It is strictly a technical juggling competition. Competitors must wear athletic attire and use music that meets the criteria for music usage as detailed in the main music section of the WJF 6 competition rules. The Short Programs are judged by two panels, the A-Jury and the B-Jury. The A-Jury determines if you executed your planned moves successfully. The B-Jury takes deductions for unnecessary foot movements, uneven and sloppy patterns, collisions, drops, and falling down. After two minutes are up, the A-Jury will no longer award any points, but the B-Jury will continue to take deductions. This is to encourage the competitors to know when to stop, and not continue after time is announced. Short Program Competitions consist of the following:
Advanced Short Programs
• Balls/Beanbags: 5 balls only. 10 move limit. 2 minute maximum. Connect as many moves together for maximum score.
• Rings: 5 rings only. 10 move limit. 2 minute maximum. Connect as many moves together for maximum score.
• Clubs: 5 clubs only. 10 move limit. 2 minute maximum. Connect as many moves together for maximum score.
Intermediate Short Programs
• Balls/Beanbags: 5 balls only. 10 move limit. 2 minute maximum. Connect as many moves together for maximum score.
• Rings: 5 rings only. 10 move limit. 2 minute maximum. Connect as many moves together for maximum score.
• Clubs: 4 clubs only. 10 move limit. 2 minute maximum. Connect as many moves together for maximum score.
Short Program and Juniors Competition Additional Information
To save time and to be as clear as possible, routine forms should be submitted with a video of the competitor demonstrating the routine. The video and form will be reviewed and if not accepted, reasons will be given and instructions provided as to how to modify the routine to make it valid. Once a routine form is validated, it is approved to be submitted for prelims.
The best way to get a high scoring routine is to connect as many moves as possible which will get you connection bonus points. Each individual move can be done a total of two times each, as long as one of the times is done in connection with another move. For example, you can do a 5 up 360 by itself, and then you can do a 5 up 360 connected to overhead throws and you'll get points for both 5 up 360s plus the connection to overhead throws. You can't do a 5 up 360, and then another 5 up 360 unless it's connected to the previous one or another move. Connections contain ZERO basic throws in between moves and connect two dissimilar moves. That's the rule for all connections. Moves that are connected to similar moves will not get a connection bonus as high or at all as connections that are made from completely different patterns. For example, connecting a shower pattern to a high low shower pattern would not score as a connection but a shower connected to a blind catch would. A 5 ball (6x,4) 5 up 360 that resumes (6x,4) is not a connection, but a (6x,4) 5 up 360 that goes directly into (6,4x) is a connection. The greater the difficulty and contrast in connected moves, the higher the connection bonus and more likely you are to get one. Keep in mind that if you do the same move two times, that also counts as two moves applied toward your total move limit (10 in the short programs). The value of each individual move as well as the connection value is decided by the judges after the routine form is submitted.
Bonus points may also be awarded for moves choreographed to the music if the judges feel that the choreography demonstrated a high enough level of skill in the competitor's ability to do the move at the precise moment they planned. Finishing moves may also be awarded bonus points such as a 7 ring pull down 360 pancake neck catch. All choreographed and finishing moves must be explained in the routine form submission to be considered for bonus points.
Club Balancing
A total of two different club balance moves may be incorporated into the junior compulsory, intermediate, and advanced short programs for clubs. To incorporate a club balance while juggling, the club must start out as part of a juggling pattern consisting of no less than the following for each division:
Three clubs for the Juniors
Four clubs for all higher divisions
The club must then be placed or thrown to a balance while the juggling continues. For the junior competitors, the club may be placed or thrown from a 3 club juggle and then the juggling can stop while maintaining the balance. The balance must be demonstrated for a minimum of 3 seconds before dropping back into the juggling pattern. Club balances may only be done within club patterns. Clubs may not be balanced with balls or rings.
Head Bouncing a Ball
A total of two different head bouncing moves may be incorporated into the junior compulsory, intermediate, and advanced ball programs. To incorporate bouncing a ball on your head while juggling, the ball must start out as part of a juggling pattern consisting of no less than than the following for each division:
3 Balls for Juniors
4 Balls for Intermediates
5 Balls for Advanced
The ball must then be thrown to a continuous bounce while the juggling continues. Head bouncing a ball may only be done within ball patterns. Head bouncing a ball cannot be done with club or ring patterns.
Ring Balancing
A total of two different ring balance moves may be incorporated into the junior compulsory, intermediate, and advanced club programs. To incorporate a ring balance in the ring program, the ring must start out as part of a juggling pattern consisting of no less than the following for each division:
3 Rings for the Juniors
4 Rings for Intermediates
5 Rings for Advanced
The ring must then be placed or thrown to a balance while the juggling continues. For the junior competitors, the ring may be placed from a 3 ring juggle and then the juggling can stop while maintaining the balance. The balance must be demonstrated for a minimum of 3 seconds before dropping back into the juggling pattern. Ring balances may only be done within ring patterns. Rings may not be balanced with balls or clubs.
Qualifying Moves
Most moves are required to qualify the pattern either during or after the move. For example, a 360 must reenter a non multiplexed pattern for a qualifying run which consists of catching the throws made after the final 360 turn is completed. A site swap generally must qualify the pattern within the run of the site swap. Some easier site swaps must be repeated multiple times from each side to score points, and some more difficult site swaps only need to be done once from one side. For example, a 5 ball 97531 must be done four continuous times to receive points. A 7 ball DB97531 only needs to be done once but then the basic pattern must be qualified after the DB97531. You will be informed how many throws are required after you submit your routine form.
Isolated Endurance
The isolated endurance competitions are designed to test the competitors in their pattern stability. The competitors compete on top of chairs. 7 balls, 7 rings, 7 clubs and 5 club backcrosses are the four competitions that comprise the isolated endurance. 7 balls and 7 rings are done in one round where all the competitors start juggling at the same time. The competitor who juggles the longest without dropping or stopping wins 1st place. 2nd and 3rd place scores will be awarded provided that 2nd or 3rd place is not also last place (This will be explained in further detail later on in this section). This year the top three finalists in the 7 ring isolated endurance will move on to an individual round with 8 rings, and then with 9. In these rounds, competitors must qualify the pattern or better to advance.
The 7 Club Isolated Endurance and 5 Club Backcross Isolated Endurance are all done individually giving each competitor 5 tries each and scored based upon the highest amount of catches. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place are all awarded prize money provided that 2nd and 3rd place are not also last place. In the event that a competitor comes in 2nd or 3rd place and also last place, they will only be awarded prize money if they qualified the pattern regardless of how many catches is required to win first place which does not need to qualify the pattern, but just needs to make more catches than any of the other competitors. To get prize money while coming in last place, you need to qualify the pattern and come in 2nd or 3rd place.
Endurance
There are three different competitions in the Endurance Event. Balls, rings and clubs. The ball and ring events each start off at eight objects. Seven clubs is the starting level for the club competition. Each competitor will be given 10 attempts in a row to get their best run in each event. The competitor with the most amount of catches with the highest number of objects in each category is the winner for that category provided the qualify the pattern. To receive prize money for 2nd or 3rd place, the competitors must at least qualify the pattern as well.
360s
There are two competitions in the 360s event:
3 Clubs
5 Clubs
Each competition gives the competitors one minute to get as many 360s as they can manage with all the objects in the air. Time starts when the first 360 turn is attempted. For 3 objects, all three must be in the air during the spin, for 5 objects, all 5 must be in the air. A 360 counts once all the objects are caught after the 360. The competitor may choose to collect all the objects after the 360, or start another 360 and the previous 360 will count after the spin of the following 360 is executed. In the event of a drop when attempting a subsequent 360, the competitor must either qualify the pattern or spin before dropping for the previous 360 to count. Competitors are free to try 720s or 1080s under all the objects, and each spin will count toward the final score, but the most consistent technique will render the highest amount of 360s overall. If time is called after the last 360 is attempted but before the objects are caught, the last 360 counts provided that the competitor makes the remaining catches. The competitor who completes the most amount of 360s within their alloted time will be the winner for that competition. To receive prize money for second or third place, a minimum of 20 360s must be completed with three clubs and at least 5 360s with 5 clubs.
Freestyle
The WJF Freestyle event gives the competitors a chance to try moves that may take more than one, two, or three tries to accomplish. Categories include:
5 Balls
6 Balls
7 Balls
5 Rings
6 Rings
7 Rings
5 Clubs
6 Clubs
7 Clubs
Each competitor will have five tries per category and alternate attempts with the other competitors in their round. There are no penalties or deductions in this event. You only get credit for the moves the judges feel you executed successfully. The winner of each category will be determined by which move the judges feel was the most difficult and original. Moves are judged on the average of 75% difficulty, 25% originality. Competitors may try as many different moves as possible however only their highest scoring move will count. This is not an accumulative score. The competitor who executed the highest scoring move in each event, wins that event.
3 Club One Minute Freestyle
Competitors will have one minute to execute as many of their most difficult and original 3 club moves and connections. Deductions will be given for drops only. The competitor with the most difficult and original moves with the fewest drops will most likely score the highest. There is no music required for this competition. Competitors do not need to submit routine forms for this competition.
Triathlon
All competitors must execute the following moves in the least amount of time. Competitors may choose the order in which they attempt each move, and may use assistants to acquire additional props and / or prop transitions. There will be no deductions. The judges will determine if the competitors successfully executed the required moves. The competitor who executes all the required moves in the best time will win. There is no music or routine forms required for this competition.
Triathlon Moves:
(All 360s and 180s must reenter and qualify a continuous pattern)
Triathlon Moves for Balls
5 Balls: Two connected 5 up 360s, two connected 97531 patterns and back into the basic pattern for 10 catches.
7 Balls: 21 catches
Triathlon Moves for Rings
5 Rings: Two connected 5 up 180s, half shower for 10 total throws, 3 up 720 connected to a 5 up 360 (No set up throws in between).
6 Rings: Pull off head from 5 rings to 6 rings and then 18 catches of 6 rings. (5 rings does not need to be qualified)
Triathlon Moves for Clubs
3 Clubs: 6 backcrosses, 9 body throws, 2 stage 720, 3 up backcross 360
5 Clubs: 5 up 360, 3 up 180, 10 single rotations, 10 backcrosses (Does not need to reenter any other pattern)
